A Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being a Ghost Story ofChristmas, commonly known as A Christmas Carol,is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in 1843and illustrated by John Leech. The story, suddenlyconceived and written in a few weeks, is one of theoutstanding Christmas stories of modern literature.
It recounts the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderlymiser who is visited by the ghost of his former businesspartner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past,Present and Yet to Come.
Through a series of spectral visions, the miserlyEbenezer Scrooge is allowed to review his life andto change its outcome. The Ghost of Christmas Pastreveals vignettes of Scrooge’s early life as a schoolboy,an apprentice, and a young man in love. The Ghostof Christmas Present reveals to Scrooge that joy haslittle to do with wealth; together they visit the homesof Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s much-abused clerk, and ofhis generous nephew Fred, who has married for love.
Finally the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come allowsScrooge a vision of what his end will be like if hecontinues on his present course—he will die despisedand unmourned. After witnessing these scenes,Scrooge is a changed man. He immediately sets aboutmending his ways, becoming generous and thoughtfuland thereby finding redemption and joy.
